Cupping has been part of folk medicine in numerous cultures throughout the world.  It is commonly used to treat muscular pain and tension, colds and flu, as well as other conditions. The application of suction cups can improve local circulation, help muscles to detoxify and thus alleviate pain. Cupping can be used to “open” the lungs and chest and to stimulate the immune system.  It can help ward off or shorten the duration of common colds and bronchitis.  It may also provide temporary relief of the symptoms of asthma and COPD.

Gua sha is another therapeutic technique that originated as a folk remedy. It involves scraping the skin to create a light brush-burn-like appearance. The marks are painless and fade within a few days.

Gua sha may be used to treat muscular pain or to bring down a fever.  It is important to avoid wind or drafts and to refrain from eating greasy or fried foods after either of these therapies.
